This isn't the prettiest shotgun in the world but it is the absolute epitome of a true commercial market hunter's gun. These men made their living by harvesting waterfowl on a daily basis for re-sale to local markets and hotels. They used the biggest shotguns available and often brought in hundreds of birds per day! Whoever used this gun certainly lived by it and needed it to reliably work every day. The heavy damascus barrels measure 35 3/4" long and feature a brass bead front sight. The upper rib is engraved "LONDON FINE TWIST". I can not remove the barrels to verify but am certain they are English proofed. Inside diameter of the bores is approximately .84" and the breech is 2 3/4" wide. Both locks are inscribed "Wm MOORE & Co". The metal has a rich, dark plum patina throughout. The stock is a period homemade working replacement which shows extensive wear and hard use with a blackened, untouched finish throughout. There are a couple sturdy repairs forward of the buttplate tang with numerous gouges, scrapes, and worm holes. There is on old chip forward of the buttplate on the right side with minor loss around the edges of the forestock. The original wedge was lost and subsequently the barrel is secured to the stock with wire nailed and wrapped around the barrels. Original iron buttplate and triggerguard. The upper tang was broken long ago and repaired with an additional screw and copper rivet. The rear ramrod pipe is original while the forward pipe is a large copper period replacement which has split down the right side. The massive wood ramrod is original from the period of use. Both actions function very well and both nipples are relatively clean originals, though the left nipple is slightly damaged. The right hammer is a period replacement and the first 13" or so of the upper rib has begun to lift. Gun weighs a hefty 12 lbs 12 oz. This is a wonderful representation of a true working big bore "market gun" that has probably downed thousands of ducks in it's life!
